Why won't Portland mortar work on a Hoboken walkup?
Most pre-1900 Hoboken brick was laid with soft lime mortar, soft so the joints absorb building movement instead of the brick face. Repoint with hard modern Portland mortar and the brick starts spalling fast. We use Type N lime-rich mortar matched to the original binder.
Can you do a rear-yard patio on a narrow Hoboken lot?
