Paterson is the densest pre-1940 brick city in North Jersey. The original walls were laid with lime mortar so soft you can press a fingernail into it — that's by design, so the soft mortar would crack and absorb building movement instead of the brick face. Repointing with Type S Portland mortar will accelerate failure within five years. Type N lime-rich mortar is the only correct call. The Great Falls Historic District has its own design review board. Most of our Paterson restoration work happens there, and we routinely prepare the scope drawings and mortar samples needed for board approval. Plan on 2–4 weeks of approval lead time before the work itself can start.
